I’m sitting here, atop a black mat, stretching, and getting ready for my last ATHX training session before my last race of the season. It’s cold outside and there is snow.
I started my season almost exactly a year ago (November 1st), and I’m anxious to bring it to an end, in my home state of Michigan. A solo 50km point-2-point race called Iceman Cometh is on the docket for this Saturday.
Mostly twotrack, with some dirt roads, sand, and climbs, this race has been on my shortlist for years. I always heard stories of racers taking on the race, through snow, mud, rain, etc. and I’ve been keen even before I ever started racing.
The startlist will be star-studded with pro’s, and speedy armatures from across the continent.
I depart YEG tomorrow AM, arrive Grand Rapids Michigan around 4pm, and then race a couple hours north to get to sign-on near Traverse City MI.
This is special country for me. I’ve spent too many weekends to count, in and around that part of the state, racing triathlons and running races with my brothers.
After my short cyclocross season I’ve come to the realization that I’m fit, just not fast. All of my South Africa and solo 24hour training lacked a lot of topend speed training, so I’m Icemanning with a huge tank, just no turbo.
I’ll bury myself on Saturday and do the best I can to bring my season to a close with a strong effort.
Weather is looking to be great! 47, just like the Cape Epic was.... oh, but one was Celsius and one is Fahrenheit.
Thanks for following along all year! I’ll do my best to send an update ASAP post race, but it’s sponsored by a beer company that makes one of my all time favourite IPA’s!
