Those of you that know me know that I get excited, probably too excited, about trying new sports nutrition foods and flavours. Suffice to say having JHM Fuels to work with has been awesome for that very reason - I get to geek out over all kinds of new sports bars all the time, which is a small dream come true! Anyways, geekiness aside, I'm still looking for some good on-bike solid-food proteins to use, and another order from JHM has a few more great options.
Let's geek out about some more protein bars!
Honey Stinger Protein Bar
Chances are you've seen these - not hard to find and from a brand that is one of the more well-known in sports food. There's 10 grams of all-whey protein in some tasty flavours in these guys.
I've used these plenty in the past and am definitely a fan. The only downside, which is actually quite a big one, is their tendency for the coating to melt into a sloppy mess during even a mildly warm ride. They still hold their shape fine, but you better finish it in one go or risk giving your fancy cycling kit some major chocolate stains. These might be best for pre and post-ride snacks, not so much on the bike if the weather is warm...
-Easy to get down
-Melty, chocolaty mess when kept in a jersey pocket during a ride
The Biosteel bars are another bar touting the 'clean' ingredient list. It's a pretty simple bar with a fruity flavour, and of course, whey protein. The texture is great for riding, and holds together nicely even in warm weather (something I'm learning is worth considering). It tastes a bit like a fruit leather snack, but with a crunchy texture that is easy to eat while riding.
-Relatively mild flavour
-Easy to chew
-Clean ingredients and whey protein
-High fibre might not sit well with some
2 more options, 2 more bars in the mix of things I eat while riding. Curious to try some? You can get them at JHMFuels.ca.
